LTTE and Muslim leaders reach peace agreement

Representatives of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Majlis Al Shura of Muttur division Monday agreed to prevail upon the Tamil and Muslim peoples to end all acts of violence against each other and to work towards ensuring peace, said a press release issued by the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission in Trincomalee.

The agreement reached on Monday at a meeting held between representatives of the LTTE and Muttur Muslim religious leaders at the Trincomalee office of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission follows:

  • Tamil and Muslim peoples live together free of fear and suspicion and build mutual trust in each other.
  • To continue to be in close contact with each other in order to achieve and sustain the above.
  • To prevail upon the Tamil and Muslim peoples to terminate all acts of violence against each other and ensure that peace prevails.
  • To jointly request the law enforcement agencies in areas under government control to impartially enforce the maintenance of law and order.
  • In areas under the control of the LTTE, the LTTE will ensure the security of the Muslim people.
  • To seek the co-operation of all concerned to achieve the above.




The LTTE’s Trincomalee political head, Mr.S.Tilak, and the President of the Majlis Al Shura, Muttur division, Moulavi M.M.Kareem, signed the agreement, sources said.

At the talks, the LTTE was represented by Mr.S.Thilak and the Majlis Al Shura of the Muttur Division was represented by Mr. M.A.G.M.Sabeer, Moulavi M.M. Kareem, President of Muttur Federation of Mosques (MFM), S.M.Javabdeen, Mr.A.Rasik Fareed, Mr.K.A.Rahuman, former President of the MFM, and Mr.M.P.M.Mustapha, principal of Jamaliya Muslim Maha Vidyalayam. The SLMM’s Trincomalee deputy head, Mr. Abdel Fattah Burkan, presided over the meeting, the press release stated.

Trincomalee district parliamentarian Mr.R.Sampanthan also participated at the meeting, which commenced at about 7 p.m. and concluded at about 10.45 p.m., sources said.
