NESoHR welcomes genocide resolution by Northern Provincial Council

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 10 February 2015, 12:20 GMT]
North East Secretariat on Human Rights (NESoHR) has welcomed the resolution passed by the Northern Provincial Council on Tuesday. “This resolution is a clarion call both to the International community and to the peoples around the world to fight for justice of the oppressed Tamil peoples,” the NESoHR said in the statement. The Chief Minister of the NPC has rightly called upon the U.N. Security Council to refer to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to try the perpetrators of the Genocide of Tamils as it is the only way in which it could be brought before the ICC since Sri Lanka is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, which created ICC. In this respect he has sought the OISL to take the necessary steps, the NESoHR statement further said.

Full text of the statement follows:

North East Secretariat on Human Rights (NESOHR) welcomes wholeheartedly the Resolution presented by the Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council, Rtd. Justice C.V. Wigneswaran, calling for International Investigation on war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide of Tamils and passed by the Council unanimously.

He has also rightly called upon the U.N. Security Council to refer to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to try the perpetrators of the Genocide of Tamils as it is the only way in which it could be brought before the ICC since Sri Lanka is not a signatory to the Rome Statute, which created ICC. In this respect he has sought the OISL to take the necessary steps.

Chief Minister has quoted extensively the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the crime of Genocide adopted by Resolution 260(iii) of the U.N.General Assembly on December 9, 1948 and entered into force on January 12, 1951 and has justified it by giving specific cases.

He has also referred to many cases of pogroms against Tamils as recorded in ‘Massacres Against Tamils , 1956-2008’ published by the NESOHR.

This resolution is a clarion call both to the International community and to the peoples around the world to fight for justice of the oppressed Tamil peoples.
