TULF council members abstain

[TamilNet, Friday, 19 June 1998, 23:59 GMT]
All eleven TULF council members of the Valikamam North Predeshiya Saba have decided to abstain from their functions as council members until the situation in Jaffna has become "normal". This was announced at a council meeting led by the council's chairman, Mr. Baskaran.

Valikamam North Pradeshiya Sabha has 21 members of which 11 belong to the TULF.

The other council members are from the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) - 06, the Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) - 02, and the Democratic People's Liberation Front (DPLF) - 02.

TULF sources said there was increasing disillusionment amongst council members given the difficulties they faced in their roles as public servants, in particular, the influence of the Sri Lanka Army on their activities.
