Sethusamudram canal project discussed in Kilinochchi workshop

A workshop on social, economic and political impact of Sethusamudram canal project, organized by the The Economic Consultancy House (TECH), an NGO working mainly in the NorthEast, was held in Kilinochchi this week. The workshop was arranged as a follow-up to a successful international conference held in Thirunelvely, Jaffna held during December 2003 and to emphasize the growing importance of the canal project on the NorthEast environment, organizers of the workshop said.

The canal project received India’s Union cabinet approvel in May 2005.

The morning events included launching of a book on environmental management containing topics discussed in the Jaffna workshop.

Topics in Natural resources invention, Resource management, Public health, Modern tools for environmental management and Pollution as they applied to NorthEast province were covered in the book. The book also contained recommendations to be followed when implementing environment sensitive projects in the NorthEast, organizers said.

During the opening ceremony, on invitation from Mr. M. Sundaramoorthy, Director of TECH, several guests including Mr. Arulganam, Agricultural Specialist from UNDP and Mr. Saiso, from JICA, Japan. lit the flame of sacrifice.

Dr. S. Sivachandiran and Prof. Jahsua, visiting lecturer from the University of Jaffna spoke on the importance of eco-friendly projects.

Prof. Sithiravadivel, Mr. Sasio and several others were presented with first copies of the book.

In the afternoon workshop guidelines for the use and conservation of the environment. The discussion also highlighted the need for the transfer of technology and technical skills to the affected areas.
